Javelin ace injured

Javelin star Robert Oosthuizen has been ruled out of participating in any further competitions this year after undergoing surgery to a groin muscle injury sustained during the Yellow Pages SA Senior Track and field Championships in Durban two weeks back.

Stellenbosch-based Oosthuizen, who posted Commonwealth qualifying efforts of 82.96 metres (at the Yellow Pages Series in Port Elizabeth on February 19) and 82.15 (at the Yellow Pages Series in Potchefstroom on March 4), had hoped to represent SA at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India in October this year.

After a successful operation which saw the rectifying of a piece of bone that tore from the body when the groin muscle injury occurred, doctors have advised Oosthuizen to give the groin six months of rest before resuming light training.

With Oosthuizen sidelined, the list of athletes who have posted Commonwealth qualifying performances this season stands at a total of 13 competitors. The final qualifying event of the local season for seniors ÔÇô the six leg of the Yellow Pages Series ÔÇô takes place at the Germiston Stadium on Tuesday (5pm start).

To date, all of LJ van Zyl (400m hurdles), Cornel Fredericks (400m hurdles); Ruben Ramolefi (3000 metres steeplechase), Hardus Pienaar (javelin), Tumelo Thagane (triple Jump), Setone Tshamano  (5000m), Elroy Galant (5000m), Estie Wittstock  (400m), Elizna Naude (discus), Sunette Viljoen (javelin), Justine Robbeson (javelin), Tebogo Masehla (3000m steeplechase) and Myrette Filmalter (3000m steeplechase) have produced Commonwealth qualifying efforts.

Khotso Mokoena is also eligible for selection, based on having achieved a silver medal for SA in the long jump at the IAAF World Indoor Championships held in Qatar last month.
