Moodie makes quarters

South Africa’s Wesley Moodie and his big Belgium partner, Dick Norman, have moved into the US Open quarter-finals after a thrilling last 16 match.

The in-form coupling edged out Martin Damm and Robert Lindstedt, beating the Czech Republic and Swedish players 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-5).

The game lasted almost three hours and was dominated by some typically big serving.

The seventh seeds have reached the final of the French Open and made the semi-finals at Wimbledon this year.

Moodie a former South African number one singles player now ranked ninth in the world in doubles. He’s also a member of SASCOC’s OPEX squad for potential medallists at the 2012 Olympics.

This was the first time that Moodie has gone past the opening round of the men’s doubles at Flushing Meadows.

There’ll be little rest for Moodie because after the US Open, he’ll be in action against India in Davis Cup World Group play-off action at Ellis Par next week.
