Our Richard Murray leads the ITU World Triathlon series after a brave bronze medal in the second ITU World Series race of the season, writes Mark Etheridge.
Cape Town’s Murray ended third behind Britain’s Jonathan Brownlee and Switzerland’s Sven Riederer.
Murray’s career continues its upward curve after finishing second in a World Cup event in Huatulco, Mexico late last year and then second in the first World Series race in Sydney, Australia earlier this year.
Murray clocked 1hr 49min 01sec for the 1500 metre swim, 40 kilometre cycle and 10km run.
Brownlee won in 1:48:47 and Riederer was nine seconds ahead of Murray to seal silver. Murray had said immediately after the race that due to cramps he would have been happy with a top 10 finish!
BSG-sponsored Murray’s latest success is bound to rubberstamp his spot in Team South Africa for the London Olympics later this year with the cut-off date for qualification in triathlon being the end of this month.
