Two of our Olympic hopeful boxers have been on the wrong end of results at the AIBA Women’s World Championships in Qinhuangdao, China this weekend, writes Mark Etheridge.
Both of them lost in the preliminary round of the Olympic qualification event.
Boxing in the lightweight division (60 kilograms) Thobile Khumalo went down to the People’s Republic of Korea’s Yong Ryu.
Ryu won the bout with a points score of 27-6 and goes on to fight Korea’s Yeonji Oh. A total of 58 boxers entered the lightweight category.
In the women’s flyweight division, little Anna du Plessis went down to Jana Juranova, her Czech opponent winning with a convincing 26-12 margin in the 55-strong category.
The third member of Team South Africa in China had a bye.
Middleweight fighter Claudia Heijns takes on Tawan’s Dara Shen in the 75kg category on Monday, a division that features 40 fighters.
