Neil Versfeld kept breaststroke swimming in the limelight as he played his part in keeping the swimming statisticians busy on the final day of the Telkom SA Short Course Championships at the GC Jollife Swimming Pool in Pietermaritzburg Monday.
ÔÇ£This was my first short course gala in about four years and I am delighted to have been able to leave Pietermaritzburg with not only the gold medal in the 200 metres breaststroke, but also an African record,ÔÇØ said Versfeld, who clocked 2min 04.88sec to dip well inside William Diering’s previous African mark of 2:06.78.
ÔÇ£I said before the Telkom SA Short Course Championships that world records would fall here in Pietermaritzburg and it’s great for SA swimming that so many new marks have been set over the past four days.ÔÇØ
Versfeld was referring to the 50 and 100 metres world records set by fellow breaststroke star Cameron van der Burgh, and the 50m world best clocked by Roland Schoeman.
Competing in the able-body competition, Natalie du Toit set a multi-disability world record of 2:29.41 in the women’s 200m individual medley while Craig Groenewald clocked 2:19.99 in the men’s 200m individual medley multi-disability race.
Following the Telkom SA Short Course Championships, Swimming SA will shortly announce the names of the swimmers who have qualified to compete in the African leg of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup to be held at the Kings Park Aquatics Centre in Durban in October this year.
